Max Thabiso Edkins, a true global citizen. He was born in Lesotho, grew up there, in Germany and in South Africa, and married a Swede. His Sesotho name Thabiso means ‘happiness’. And Max always approached life with a huge smile and embracing others – with a strong, positive life force.
His professional scientific background gave him the foundation to becoming an activist for climate justice. Unsatisfied with the status quo, Max brought passion and enthusiasm to everything he did, endlessly pushing for bigger and better. As his friends and colleagues described him: “Max being Max was always ahead of the curve”.
Max Thabiso was 35 years old when his life was taken away, while en route to the UN Environment Assembly and One Planet Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. He left behind his wife, two small sons, parents, his brother and a big global family.
